Frequently asked questions

  • Because dirt costs money. Dust, dirt, and animal hair accumulate in the ventilation ducts, and when they clog the system, the efficiency collapses. It means higher electricity bills, more maintenance and faster wear and tear on motors and electronics. Why pay extra when you can keep your system running at peak performance by cleaning the ducts? When the ducts are clean, the system works better, lasts longer and saves money. It's an easy decision.

  • Truth? There is no indisputable evidence that cleaning the ventilation ducts prevents health problems. It has never been proven that cleaning your ducts will protect you from health risks. Research also does not show that the dust levels in the home rise from dirty ducts. Why? Because most of the dirt sticks to the inner surfaces of the ducts and does not end up in the room air. So don't believe all the hype - it's still worth cleaning the ventilation ducts to keep the system long-lasting and energy-efficient.

  • There is no one answer for everyone. Before 2018, Finland followed the rules: 10 years for gravity ventilation, 5 years for mechanical ventilation, and every year for demanding premises, such as professional kitchens. But after 2018, things changed - now the cleanliness must be checked regularly and cleaned immediately if dirt is found. Fat ducts in restaurants? They must be cleaned at least once a year. The best way to keep it in a glove? Call in a qualified technician every year to make sure the ducts are in good condition. It saves money and effort in the long run.

  • Yeah, but don't think you're getting the job done right. You can vacuum and brush as far as you can, but the real problems are deeper, where you can't reach. Professionals use special equipment that thoroughly cleans the ducts, not just the few meters behind the valve. If you really want to do the job, leave it to the professionals. Self-cleaning is like trying to paint a house with one stroke of a brush - not enough.

  • Sure, you could open the valves and brush the dust off, but you'll only be able to clean part of it, and at the same time you might be spreading dust into the indoor air. The handling of the valves is also meticulous work. Adjusting the valves is a matter of precision, and during washing they should not be opened or closed at all - otherwise the adjustment will go wrong. And if the valves get messed up, you can forget about the balance of the whole system. Result? Poorer ventilation and bigger problems. Leave it to the professionals and make sure it's done right.

  • Cleaning the ventilation ducts is precise work. First, we make a plan: we check the drawings, agree on a schedule and make sure that everything is ready. The customer always knows where to go.

Cleaning starts with washing the valves. Then the ducts are brushed clean using the right methods – whatever the system. The machines are thoroughly cleaned, and all problems are reported directly to the customer. Finally, the air flows are checked and, if necessary, adjusted. If ordered separately, a cleaning certificate and report will be provided.

This process ensures that your ventilation works at full capacity and the indoor air remains healthy. Professionals handle the job as it should be - no unnecessary adjustments.

  • Make sure the service provider does the whole job, not just cleaning the ducts. Check their qualifications - don't trust amateurs. Chemical biocides and disinfectants? Be careful with them. Although they are now fashionable, their use is controversial. They can cause more harm than good. The fact is that there is no evidence that they are useful, but we know about their negative effects on indoor air. IVAeris Oy does not recommend using them unless it is absolutely necessary - and even then only after everything has been properly cleaned. Make a wise decision and take care of your home properly.

Regular cleaning of ventilation systems is essential to ensure good indoor air quality. Dirty ducts and equipment can reduce air quality, worsen allergies and reduce energy efficiency. People talk about sniffing the ventilation ducts, IV cleaning or brushing the ductwork, but in reality it is a much more complicated process that covers the cleaning of the entire ventilation system.

  • Gravity systems: In these, the structural material channels are easily damaged by the rotating brushes, so the correct method is to push the brush through. In addition, the valves and replacement air valves must be washed and their filters replaced.

  • Exhaust air exchange sites: In addition to the ductwork, valves and replacement air valves are cleaned here, and filters are changed. In addition, the top vacuum cleaner located on the roof must be opened and cleaned.

  • LTO systems: These involve the most work, because in addition to the previous procedures, the ventilation machine, its fans and the heat recovery cell are also cleaned. The machine's filters must also be changed.

Sometimes, even if the ductwork is not dirty, the equipment may still require cleaning separately. Dirty ventilation ducts can cause many problems, such as reduced air quality, worsening of allergies and reduced energy efficiency. Before 2018, the regulations were clear: exhaust ducts had to be cleaned every five years and supply air ducts at least every ten years. This meant that gravity systems had to be cleaned every ten years and other systems at least every five years, as other systems always have mechanical exhaust ventilation.

With the new indoor air regulation of 2018 came a change: the cleanliness level of the ductwork must be monitored and cleaned as soon as the need arises. This is not a looser regulation, but aims for more efficient and frequent cleaning. There is a lot of dust and pollutants in the outdoor air, which enter the indoor spaces through poorly filtered ventilation or uncontrollably, for example through windows. Especially in urban areas, the air quality can be so poor that it has a significant impact on health, unless the ventilation system is properly maintained and the filters are changed often enough.

In the Nordic countries and Finland, indoor air quality is critically important, as we spend around 90% of our time indoors. According to EU studies, poor air quality significantly shortens the lifespan, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining ventilation equipment.

Many factors affect the contamination of ventilation ducts and machines, such as the number of residents, pets and the environment. In many homes, it is recommended to have the ventilation ducts cleaned every couple of years. Commercial kitchens and other facilities that produce a lot of fire gases and dust are a chapter in their own right: their exhaust ventilation ducts get dirty quickly, and by law they must be cleaned annually to prevent fires and health risks. Unfortunately, many restaurants neglect this obligation until the health authority intervenes.
